Two-thirds (69%) of hire car drivers would rent an electric car, rising to 91% of 18-34 year olds, according to a new survey of 1,000 car hirers by Opinium, on behalf of iCarhireinsurance.com, a leading provider of car hire excess insurance. In contrast, only 56% of those aged 55 and over would consider it.
A fifth (20%) would like to hire an electric car to test one out, while 19% see it as a way of ‘doing their bit for the environment’. However, only one in ten (12%) of people are willing to pay extra to hire an electric car compared to hiring a petrol or diesel one.
Almost a third (31%) of car hirers say they would never hire an electric car, with this feeling highest amongst those aged 55 and over (44%), compared to just 9% of under 34s.
The survey also reveals key concerns around hiring an electric car, including worries about finding charging points (28%), and the driving range (24%).
Ben Wooltorton, of iCarhireinsurance.com,said: “Rental companies are continuing to grow their electric fleets, but many drivers will want reassurance that the charging infrastructure is in place before they’re willing to try them. Electric cars are ideal for those looking to drive short distances and hiring one is a great way to test one out, but the locations and number of charging points will be crucial for those planning longer journeys.”
